Question

Frequent Questions

  • What the heck is Pilates?
Pilates is a whole-body movement philosophy created in the 1920’s by German fitness pioneer, Joseph Pilates. His goal was to stretch, strengthen and balance the body and mind through intentional breath and movement. Joseph Pilates designed his exercises to be performed on a mat as well as on a series of specialized equipment he invented for his methodology. Modern Pilates is often taught in “Classical” (Joe’s original exercises) or “Contemporary” (creative interpretations of Joe’s exercises) styles.
  • Can I do this? I’m not sure that Pilates is for me.
Pilates is for everybody! Originally designed as a rehabilitation strategy, the Pilates Method supports bodies of all ages and abilities. Programs can be designed for gentle, supported stretching and breathwork to more intense cardio and athletic strength training. We always recommend discussing any new exercise program with your doctor before proceeding.
  • I’m brand new to this. Where should I start?
We recommend scheduling a private session for your introduction to Pilates. Our instructor will be able to work 1:1 with you to understand your unique body and fitness goals, as well as answer any questions you may have. This also gives us ample time to familiarize you with the equipment and set you up to succeed in a group Reformer class.
  • What do I wear?
For safety and sanitary reasons, we require grip socks to be worn in all Pilates classes. ToeSox are available for sale in the studio or you can bring your own. Comfortable, lightweight Pilates or Yoga leggings, pants, tees and tanks will allow a full range of motion and keep you cool during your workout.
  • I am pregnant. Can I do Pilates?
Pilates can be a wonderful support for pre and postnatal bodies! Please inform the studio before attending a class or private session so we can craft an appropriate program for you. We will require a doctor’s note for any pregnant women beginning Pilates for the first time.
  • How many times a week should I do Pilates? When will I start seeing results?
It depends on your availability and consistency. 2-4 times per week seems to be the sweet spot for maximizing effectiveness. As Joseph Pilates famously said, “In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 sessions you will see the difference, and in 30 sessions you will have a whole new body.”
